I have travelled using a small suitcase, a backpack, a large tote, a small bag and a suitcase, and out of everything I used, I recommend a backpack. It takes less space, it's easy to carry in terms of weight size and function, and it provides enough space for the essentials. Of course it's up to you, but I prefer a backpack because the weight is distributed when carried on both shoulders compared to a large tote bag. Plus, you can leave it with you under the seat in front of you.
Now onto the essentials. The first thing I always do is pack spare clothes and undergarments. My tip for spare clothes is look at the weather at your destination and choose your spares according to that. For whatever reason, just have the spares in case anything happens to your suitcase (touch wood). Next thing I do is stock up my emergency bag. I have plasters, pain killers, time of the months stuff, tissues, wipes, spare hairbands etc. Basically anything useful if an accident was to occur at the airport, flight or at your destination. The next thing is definitely an essential...cables. I make sure to pack all my electronic cables and put them in a small bag, so I know where all of them are. I also bring my laptop and kindle. Second to last, I have a small toiletry bag with a sheet mask, contact lenses and a mini bottle of contact solution, eye drops and lip balm. And the last item I pick up is at WHSmith, and it is usually a GLAMOUR or Cosmopolitan Magazine, or both!
So that is all for my flight essentials. Of course I have my passport, phone and purse with me, but hopefully that was a no brainier. Let me know what are your in flight essentials! And if you think I overpack!
I'll see you next week for more,
Bye ♥
