First Impressions: Foundation Edition (Estée Lauder, NARS, L'Oréal, and More!)

All images belong rightfully to their owner(s)

Since we supposedly talked about the skincare last time - which is a key factor for a good skin day - sometimes we just need 'that' extra help. If you haven’t caught on what's today's First Impression, it is all about the base! But I’m sure you already knew that by the title of this post! I gotta stop rambling! So, let’s see what I have to say about these foundations!

I am gonna start with a high end foundation, and it is the Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation with SPF 10. This foundation is £32.50 for 30ml. I didn’t buy this foundation, but I did receive a sample in Boots. This was a beau-ti-ful flawless base. It was matte, but it looked natural. The colour was a perfect match for my skin tone (at the time). It didn’t look like an oil slick after 4 hours; but I did have to dab with a tissue to remove the excess oil. However, it was still immaculate. For being a medium to full-ish coverage (full-ish as I don’t know how full coverage this can be) it still felt lightweight and breathable on my skin. If I had to wake up looking flawless every day, I would want the skin this foundation gives me. I recommend this for anyone looking for a flawless base, and for those with combination to oily skin. Plus, it comes with a variety of shades which I think will cover most skin tones. 9/10, because for the first time ever I felt like I found the foundation that I want to repurchase… But before I get to do that, I actually need to purchase this. I also want to mention, always ask for a sample before you buy any high-end foundation. This is so you can try the shade and formula before committing.

Next up is a much hyped up beauty brand by the talented makeup artist, Charlotte Tilbury. I received samples for both her base products from Feel Unique: the Light Wonder Foundation and The Magic Foundation. I’ll start with the Light Wonder Foundation as it has less coverage than the Magic Foundation. The Light Wonder Foundation has a light to medium-ish coverage. Great for someone who wants a light base (obviously), or balance their overall skin tone. It’s a dewy finish, so I was slightly skeptical as I usually go for a matte finish. On the first application, I was fairly happy with the dewy look even though I have oily skin. However, it did become too dewy with time. I was looking very close to an oil slick at the end of the day. Even though that did happen, it only rubbed ‘badly’ around my nostrils and chin. However, I don’t remember dabbing off excess oil off my face, which could have helped with the oil slick situation. Overall, I will give this a 5/10. I don't dislike it, but I have another tinted moisturiser which I prefer and works for skin. This comes with an alright 10 shades in the range, which could work with most skin tones. If you buy this, you will get 40ml for £32, which is good compared to other high-end foundations. I recommend this for those with normal and dry skin, and maaayyybbee combination skin if you powder the T-Zone.

Now for the higher coverage foundation within the range, and it is The Magic Foundation. The initial application impressed me as it was flawless, but a slightly satin/dewy coverage.  Even though it was beautiful on the skin, I ended up looking oily at the end of the day. If I remembered correctly, I think it rubbed off more than the Light Wonder Foundation, which was surprising as this is supposed to be a ‘Magic’ foundation. Maybe it’s more noticeable when it rubbed off, because the coverage was higher, so the patches of skin were a lot more visible where the foundation rubbed off. In my opinion, this gets a 3/10. I don’t see myself buying this foundation in the near future. Basically, anything below a 5 is not a contender for purchasing/repurchasing. Although this is not a terrible foundation like I am making it seem to be, it just didn’t live up to my expectation. I expected MAGIC! That’s just my opinion, but I would recommend this if you have normal skin or even dry skin as it is a dewy foundation. FYI, this is cheaper than the Light Wonder, and it costs £30.

Let me introduce some high-street foundations, and the first one up is the Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless Liquid Foundation. I decided to purchase this, because the shade that I got was speaking to me. Usually, I’m always wrong when I buy foundations in the drugstore; however this was a perfect match. That’s the first pro for this foundation is the shade range. I would consider myself to be very yellow toned for someone with a deeper skin tone. Therefore I was surprised that this shade was a perfect match for my paler days. Plus, since this is drugstore, I could easily repurchase five of these for the price of one high end foundation. That is amazing! However, it does not blow me away as much as the Double Wear from Estée Lauder.  Nonetheless, it is great for the price point, and it’s a good medium coverage foundation. Plus, I don’t ever remember feeling insecure when wearing this foundation. Lastly, I’m not sure if this is a matte foundation per say, but it did look natural on me (I am combo/oily). Overall, this gets 7/10! And it is £6.99 in Boots.

This next foundation is definitely matte-ish looking, and it is the Maybelline Dream Velvet Soft Matte Foundation. I bought this foundation during the transitional phase last autumn, and when I had a tan. I remember this feeling like velvet/mousse-like and lightweight on the skin. I remembered that I was compliment for having nice skin on the day I wore it. Overall, I would give this a 7/10, and I don’t know why I am giving it the score that just did. But, that’s the score my gut is telling me to give. The worst thing about this foundation is the shade range. I want the shade range to be like the Fit Me line for every Maybelline foundations. This is £7.99 at Boots.

Just a reminder before I continue, this will be a looonnnngggggg post than I initially thought. You’re half though! If you still here, I would like to give you a hug. But, on with the show!

This is one of the hyped foundation from the drugstore that doesn’t need an introduction, it is L’oreal's True match Liquid Foundation! This foundation, pin pointing my shade was a mission! I ended finding my winter shade, which I am happy about as I bought this at the beginning of the year. This foundation literally took me over three years to buy as I was soooooo confused when I was picking my shade. It all ended well – shade wise. On the first application, I would say this is a medium coverage foundation. The price is on the higher end of the drugstore, but no where near the Charlotte Tilbury's foundation prices. Though the feeling of it on my skin was nice, and the price was good, it was nothing special in my opinion. I would say this is a natural finish leaning on dewy – So, a satin finish? Besides the fact that I didn’t have any feels for it, I ended having a mini breakout on my forehead. I don’t know if it’s hormonal, but I usually don’t get a breakout like that if it’s due to hormones. This gets a 4/10, because it wasn't up to my expectations, and it broke me out. This foundation is £9.99.

And the last foundation from the drugstore is L’Oreal’s Infallible Pro Matte Foundation. I had this  foundation shipped from the US to the UK, because the shade range in the UK sucks compared to the US. With all that effort, I bought a shade which was way too dark for me, even my summer skin tone right now is not dark enough. However, I managed to make it work. I mix this in with a high-end tinted moisturiser - which I will mention later. Although the shade is not correct, I have worn it all over my face and stayed at home to get a feel of it; and it is a great foundation. Though it is a ‘matte’ foundation, my skin looked natural (as it can be with the wrong shade), and it felt natural. It’s almost as comparable to the Double Wear foundation in my opinion when it comes down to flawlessness and weight. I would rate this 8/10, because I believe if I could get the right shade, it would be my holy grail! Note to L’Oreal UK, the UK has just as much diversity in skin tones as the US. There is a market for bringing more shades, so please do actually bring in those shades.

And last but not least (kinda), is the NARS Velvet Matte Tinted Moisturiser with SPF 30. I have raved on about this in previous make up tutorials and favourites. This will definitely be a continuous repurchase, until I find something better. I don’t know about you, but when it comes to makeup, I am always on the hunt for the new next thing. However, I appreciate NARS as a whole brand as they cater for many skin tones and undertones. Since I haven’t finish using a whole tube of this tinted moisturiser - which is a good medium coverage, I have been mixing this in with the L’Oreal’s Infallible Pro Matte Foundation to create my perfect shade for my ever increasing tan. I have recommend this to many friends, and all of them love this tinted moisturiser. We all have different skin tones, undertones, skin types, and prefers different makeup looks; but this is loved by all of us. I highly recommend this for all skin types. Full marks! And it’s £32 for 50ml, which is more than what you'll usually get with a higher-end base products.

And this is the ultimately the last product of this First Impression: Foundation Edition, and it is Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation – it was a fail. This was entirely my fault. I was overexcited to see that Bourjois finally came out with more shades for tan-deeper skin tones. Predominately, this brand caters for light to fairer skin tones, which is why I was suuupppppeeeerrrr excited to see that Bourjois introduced more shades into one of their foundation line. However, this led me to pick the entirely wrong shade. I chose the darkest shade in the whole range, and I can't even wear it in summer. I put my hands up and say this is my fault. Therefore, I cannot rate this foundation just yet. However, I can mix this in with a lighter foundation, so I can at least get a jest/feel of it. This foundation is £9.99 in Boots.

So, that is it for my entire First Impression: Foundation Edition. That was definitely another whopper of a post. I have recently been enjoying writing more informative posts, so I can be more thorough with everything I have to say, and be as transparent as possible with the information I provide. Thank you for staying until the very end.

I’ll see you on Monday for another First Impression,
Bye
