I
think all of you O.G peeps out there know that I am into those super romantic types of plot lines... and the Beauty and the Beast concept is no exception. It's just so timeless and
romantic... and I can't help myself for wanting to read more! But of course I
love those books that takes the theme to a new level… And this first book is no
exception. (I have to apologise if I get the summary a bit messed up, as it's been around 6 months since I've read the book).
The Cold king is the first book to this series and my first book by the author, Amber Jaeger. As I said in
the intro, this book kinda follows the plot line of Beauty and the Beast; however there's no time limit to the
curse, or servants being turned into house hold items, and definitely no father
figure. This book follows the story of Calia. Calia was chosen to be the Cold king's new servant as someone from her village has to go. Off she went to discover that the Cold King lived up to his name. However, as time passes between them, the Cold King never thought that his new servant can resurface old feelings to brew
deep down inside of him. A
turn of events will happen which causes Calia to leave the castle. Can the Cold King become a man once more?
As I said
previously, this book has the same concept as 'Beauty and the Beast'. For most people out there, they think they
seen most of it before. Do not judge this book by its concept! Jaeger did a
complete spin of the story. Of course all stories relating to the concept of Beauty and the Beast, the 'beast' ends up
returning to his normal/human state. But don't be put off by the fact you think
you know what will happen in the end... because you don't! There were many ups
and downs, and the story was gripping throughout all the highs and lows. Jaeger
did an amazing job of keeping the original flare of the plot, but adding a bit
of kick and punch here and there. I would recommend this book, and I would not mind
rereading this book again; and for me to reread a book, is a statement in itself.
If
the Cold King follows the concept of beauty and the beast, The Fire King follows the
concept of Snow White... without
the seven dwarfs. This is one of the many books I have read this month. Unlike the
title of the first book, I personally think that title ‘The Fire King’ does not fit the plot of this book as the story
revolves around the heroine... but then again, some can argue that The Cold King is
based more so on Calia and not the king himself. That is just my opinion, but I
understand why Jaeger continued with the theme of titling her book with ‘The Something King’.
But
back to The Fire King's review. Katiyana Nix is the ‘Snow White’ to this new story. The
story all started off, because her father decided to get remarried. Katiyana was
actually happy to meet her potential stepmother, and she had all these ideas
of how she is going to have this amazing new complete family. It went downhill
as soon as they met, and even more so for her kingdom. Katiyana managed to
escape by the help of a couple of people within the castle. Having nowhere to
go, she ended meeting three new girls within the forest and she decides to live
with them. Too soon, Katiyana wanted to explore outside her boundaries and see
the world without needing to hide herself. However, getting too close to the Fire
King’s borders, she was captured. As a series of
events continues, she realised that the Fire King himself has a score to settle
with her stepmother. The two ended up teaming together to get her kingdom
back, as well as avenge his highness's blood thirst. Will the two succeed and kill
two birds with one stone?
Between
the two books, I personally prefer The
Cold King. I am not saying that The
Fire King was awful in any sort of ways, but it was not as gripping and shocking for me
personally. What I meant by 'shocking', is that it did not make me gasps as much as the first one. Plus, I think I prefer the romance in the first one
as The Cold King definitely broke my heart more than once. However, what I do
love about the second book is that it did not completely abandon some of the
characters in the first book. And even more so, The Fire King's ending was a small surprise for me, as you become fully
aware and understand Katiyana’s Stepmother reasoning to the way she acted as everything
was all tied up at the end of the story.
So,
that is my rather big overview of The Cold King and The
Fire King by Amber Jaeger.
I hope you get the chance to read these books, as I am sure you will love them! And one more thing! After this, all blog posts will be scheduled
